Rates of obesity and diabetes have increased in many countries over the past few decades. To address this problem, some governments have introduced a special tax on soft drinks and other beverages with added sugar, making them more expensive than water or unsweetened drinks. Do you think governments should tax sugary drinks to improve public health? Why or why not?
I support the tax. Price has a big effect on what people buy, especially young people with little money. If a can of soda costs more, people will buy fewer of them. The government can also use the money from the tax to pay for health programs or sports facilities in schools.
I don't think it is fair. This kind of tax hits poor families the hardest, because they spend a larger part of their income on food and drinks. Also, people can get sugar from candy, cakes, and many other foods, so taxing only drinks will not solve the problem. Education about healthy eating would be more effective.
