Write for an Academic Discussion
You have 10 minutes. Your professor is teaching a class on educational assessment. Write a post responding to the professor's question. Express and support your opinion and make a contribution to the discussion in your own words. Write at least 100 words.
In this unit we are looking at how schools measure what students have learned. Standardized tests, in which every student answers the same questions under the same conditions, are still widely used to evaluate schools and to decide university admissions. Some educators argue that they are the fairest way to compare students. Others say they push teachers to focus on test preparation and fail to show what students can really do. Do you think standardized tests are a good way to evaluate students? Why or why not?
I think they are. Without a common test, there would be no fair way to compare students from different schools, because a high grade at one school may mean something very different at another. Test scores also help governments see which schools are struggling so they can send extra support where it is needed.
I disagree. When so much depends on one test, teachers spend months on practice questions instead of real learning. Students who are creative or good at hands-on work often don't do well on multiple-choice exams. And some students get so anxious during tests that their scores don't show what they actually know.
