For questions 1-8, read the text below and think of the word which best fits each gap. Use only one word in each gap.
Anyone (1) has watched an octopus unscrew the lid of a jar will find it hard to believe that the animal is a relative of the garden snail. In (2) of their soft bodies and short lives, octopuses are among the most intelligent invertebrates known to science. In aquariums, they have been seen to recognise individual keepers, and some have even squirted water at people they appeared to dislike. What makes this all the (3) remarkable is that an octopus's nervous system is organised quite differently from (4). Around two thirds of its neurons are found not in the brain (5) in the arms, which seem to be capable (6) acting with a surprising degree of independence. This raises fascinating questions about (7) it actually means to think. If intelligence can develop along such a different path, it may be far more common in the natural world than we have given other animals credit (8).
