Not so long ago, many people off public libraries as relics of a pre-digital age, and in some countries hundreds were closed as local councils struggled to ends meet. Yet the libraries that survived have to the challenge remarkably well. Alongside books, many now lend tools, musical instruments and even cake tins, and they have become places where people can learn to code, get help filling in official forms or simply sit somewhere warm without being expected to spend money. from being a relic, the library has become one of the last truly public spaces in many towns. Librarians are quick to out, however, that none of this is entirely new: libraries have always been about far more than books. What has changed is the scale of the need. With so many services now available only online, people without internet access at home can easily find themselves behind. For them, the library is not a luxury but a lifeline. Whether funding will pace with demand remains to be seen, but few of those who use these buildings would argue that libraries have their usefulness.
