Rooftop beehives have become a familiar in many European cities, perched on hotels, offices and even concert halls. For the businesses that host them, bees offer an appealing way of attention to their green credentials. Beekeepers and ecologists, however, have begun to concerns. A city can only feed so many colonies, and honeybees compete with wild bees for the same flowers. In some districts the number of hives has grown out of all to the food available, that the amount of honey each hive produces has fallen sharply. Wild bees, many of which are more effective pollinators than honeybees, risk being out altogether. None of this means that rooftop hives should be banned. Rather, experts argue that every new hive should be by planting, so that a company installing a colony also commits to sowing wildflowers or planting trees. Without that, urban beekeeping the risk of doing the environment more harm than good.
