Multiple-choice cloze

For questions 1-8, read the text below and decide which answer (A, B, C or D) best fits each gap.

Last spring I took a short break to Lisbon after a busy period at work, and it turned out to be more useful than I expected. I’d promised myself I would slow down, but I kept checking my phone habit, even while sitting by the river. On the first morning I decided to switch off notifications and take responsibility my own time, which made a huge difference. Instead of rushing from one sight to another, I wandered through small streets and across a local market where residents were buying fruit and chatting as if they had all the time in the world. I joined a walking tour to the ice with other travellers, and soon we were sharing tips about cheap cafés and quiet viewpoints. What surprised me most was how the city is trying to down on waste: many shops offer tap water refills, and some hotels encourage guests to reuse towels rather than for fresh ones every day. It isn’t perfect, but it shows real progress. Back home, I tried to up the habit by walking to the office once in a while instead of driving. It may seem a small change, yet it feels more effective than simply talking about the environment. And although I still check my phone once a blue moon on holiday, I no longer let it take over.
